Saponaria is a relatively small genus of 30 to 40 species in the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae). The genus Saponaria takes its name from the Latin words saponis ("soap") and aria ("pertaining to sap"). Several species can actually be used to make liquid soap by soaking their leaves in water. The leaves contain saponins which cause water to foam when agitated.
Bloom time: May to August.
