The big yellow roots we know as rutabagas grown from Rutabaga seeds are often called winter turnips or Swedes. They originated as a cross between the cabbage and the turnip. Before pumpkins were readily available in the UK and Ireland, these large root vegetables were hollowed out and carved for use as Jack O'Lanterns.
