Eucalyptus Seeds

Product Details

Eucalyptus cinerea. This tender perennial shrub is grown for its firm round leaves that grow along the length of pliable, somewhat pendant branches. The leaves are smooth and silvery blue-green in colour, and provide amazing contrast of both shape and colour in flower arrangements. The leaves famously earned this Eucalypt the common name Silver Dollar Tree. It can be grown indoors as a houseplant, or in the garden as an eye-catching specimen that will be ready to harvest 120 to 150 days from planting. If protected over winter (and this would be in mild gardens or greenhouses), it will potentially grow to the size of a tree at 7m (22') tall. Give Eucalyptus seeds a head start indoors 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost.

Tender Perennial.

Timing

Timing
Sow indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost date. That’s January-ish on the coast. Germination should occur in 14-21 days.

Starting

Starting
Lightly cover the seeds and keep moist and warm until germination. Once the seeds sprout, remove from bottom heat and remove any humidity dome. It seems that Eucalyptus seedlings are prone to damping off, so provide bright light and air circulation around the plants. At 10-13cm (4-5″), transplant on to a container if keeping indoors. Or transplant outdoors once night time temperatures are consistently above 10°C (50°F).

Growing

Growing
Plant in full sun in well drained, moderately rich soil. This Eucalypt can be grown in a container as an indoor houseplant and pruned to a compact size. Outdoors, take branches as needed for floral displays. They can also be dried or preserved with glycerin.
